What seemed like a sudden drop in temps isn’t the only thing that has us thinking of winter. After a season of breezy summer pieces transform your wardrobe for winter with an arsenal of items that will have you warm and toasty in no time.
Wool-blend tights and leggings are de rigeur for winter as are opaques. This is your seasonal second skin so have them on hand and wear them always. These little lovelies will let you wear your favourite dress well into winter. Look for neutral colours. Black is eternal and this season sees patterned grey stride into style. Never wear tights as pants unless under a skirt that covers all and beware pale colours that look sweet, they are notoriously hard to pull off.
Long skirts and dresses make a statement this season while hugging the length of your legs with that little bit of extra warmth. From midi (mid calf) to maxi (floor length) cool girls are slinking around in graphic prints and patterns that add a punch of colour on grey days. Body con styles are super sexy without the goose-bumps or let some smart draping do the work.
A signature coat will weather proof you on blustery days. Shorter hemlines between thigh and knee are more practical while still offering the protection you need. Bright colours project a fun-loving attitude, camel coats are super-stylish and black is either slick or lazy (so make sure the cut and fit is perfect). A classic trench will never let you down and there are loads of shorter options around. Cuts fitted through the waist are most flattering however the current cape craze has us questioning our shape – just keep them cropped to avoid a body blow-out. For an on-trend piece that reeks of chic look to shearling.
If investing in a jacket causes a financial meltdown opt instead for the street-wise vest destined to hit our shores any second courtesy of the high street stores. Treat it like your handbag, throw on with everything and don’t be afraid to layer it over a flirty dress or with a favourite jacket.
Right now there is no excuse for not having boots – from ankle boots teamed with luscious socks to boots that creep over the knee. Look to a hiking style for trekking around town, go Victorian gothic with polished lace ups or keep it simple in a deliciously light camel or stone. Adding extra warmth and length to ankle boots or peeking out above longer styles sky-high socks are a big winner in the style stakes and keep you cosy to boot.
Finally find yourself an oversized beanie or structured felt fedora style to keep the warmth in. Most of your body heat escapes via your head so protect this area and you can afford to wear less below.
So layer up with this seasons best pieces. Pull on knits of differing weights and lengths for a look that always looks clever. Bodysuits under fine knits under vests under coats or jackets peel away indoors to reveal yet another stylish ensemble or simply go classic with a gorgeous dress, coat, tights and boots. The key is to keep an eye on colours that work together and your layers will always work. Keep the silhouette slinky when you want to feel sexy, structure always feels professional and snuggle up to cosy knits for a casual weekend for a winter wardrobe that works every time.
