Oh, the Serenity

Health + Wellbeing are buzz words bandied around to sell products, experiences, and everything in between. I believe the originator of this concept might well belong to Swami, the legendary yogi, philosopher, television personality and natural health expert whose has called Australia home for over half a century.

Swami established her yoga retreat within 60 acres of magnificent bushland at Kenthurst. This peaceful oasis established in 1983 offers guests delicious vegetarian food, walks, yoga classes, meditation classes, massages, as well as a pool, steam room, and gym with a tennis court down a short walking track.

This haven of tranquillity, only an hour’s drive northwest from the hustle and bustle of downtown Sydney proved to be just the medicine I needed as I arrived tired and a bit stiff from one too many days in front of a computer screen. A few days later, I left recharged and refreshed and so very grateful for the Swami Yoga Retreat experience.

The accommodation was comfortable, the yoga room proved a yogis delight – including wood burning stove, which added to the cosy atmosphere on cold July nights.

I was blessed to have a bestie, Debs aka Sunshine, accompany me this time, but previously I’ve happily gone to Swami’s as a single guest. The warm and inviting atmosphere meant I’ve never felt lonely or alone as one is surrounded by loving vibes and smiles – I wish I could bottle it. Friendly hosts and beautiful surroundings mixed with tasty food and top-notch yoga + meditation sessions – honestly, what’s not to love about this hidden treasure?

Swami’s yoga program, which taught many Australians to bend, breathe and connect, ran on morning television from the late 60’s through to the 70’s. Meditation, yoga and holistic living are all part of her philosophy. Swami was president of the Sarasvati Yoga Society and the Australian Yoga Masters Association for over 40 years and was a prominent figure in yoga thought in the West. Whilst Swami has retired, her lovely son Sanjay and others are privileged to continue her teachings and philosophies. Day passes and overnight stays available.
