Buddy movies are common place in the history of cinema, so why change this winning formula – no reason it seems.
Veteran actors Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline star in the latest Hollywood buddy flick Last Vegas. This movie tells the tale of aging commitment phobe Billy (Michael Douglas) and his childhood buddies from Flatbush, Brooklyn, Sam (Kevin Kline), Paddy (Robert De Niro) and Archie (Morgan Freeman) who are now senior citizens experiencing varying degrees of post mid life crisis blues.
Sam is marooned with his wife in a retirement village in Florida – water aerobics anyone? Archie is practically under house arrest living with his overprotective family in New Jersey, Paddy is depressed and living alone in Brooklyn following his wife’s death and Billy is a successful entrepreneur living in Malibu with his 30 something girlfriend.
Billy proposes to said young girlfriend and his buddies arrange for one last bachelor bash in Las Vegas (hence the name). How harmless could that idea be?
Last Vegas is light hearted, sad, romantic, sentimental and loads of fun. In some ways it’s predictable but who cares?
Mary Steenburgen plays Diana, a lounge singer who just happens to make a fabulous foil for the old fellas; I’ll say no more lest I give too much away.
It was a delight to watch these legends of the film industry strut their stuff, these actors know their craft. This film may not be an all time classic but I highly recommend it for a bit of light comic relief.
