Welcome to the style section of Only The Good News. I am a fashion writer, author, public speaker and personal stylist with a serious passion for image management. I love working with people to draw out a visual style that matches their personality, all the while teaching them to make their own style choices easily and naturally. This column aims to be your shortcut to style.
The word style is most often referenced in relation to outward appearance, whether is desirable or clever, unique or ordinary. The latest ‘it’ job is that of a stylist, someone who organises and creates outfits especially for you, outfits that show the world how effortlessly exceptional, clever, unique and yes, stylish you are. Style is obviously subjective so to truly quantify it is near impossible.
Though infinite variations of style make their way into our lives through means including art, music, entertainment, cinema, design and much more, in the fashion stakes a handful of women have made the deepest impressions.
Audrey Hepburn’s style is best described as naturally sophisticated, elegant and graceful. In the 1950s she demonstrated a modern way to look clever, desirable and feminine for those who refused to resort to the bombshell trend. Designer Hubert de Givenchy said ‘She knew exactly what she wanted’ indicating that Hepburn was always the master of her own style. Hepburn’s clothes ‘echoed her spirit and mind’ suggested Vera Wang in Audrey Style (Hodder press) with outfits that looked smart yet attainable and practical. The Little Black Dress, the white collared shirt, the cropped pant, the list goes on, Hepburn inspired women of her generation and those that followed.
Another doyenne of modern style was the electric Diana Vreeland. Always striking and immaculately groomed Vreeland saw beauty in art and life, celebrating the unique style of others with a passion as rich and flamboyant as the woman herself. She boosted many brilliant careers and advised the likes of Jackie Kennedy in her first lady style choices.
Her entrée into fashion publishing began at Harper’s BAZAAR with a column called ‘Why Don’t You…’ suggesting weird and wonderful ways to emulate the fantasies of the globe’s wealthy elite in order to encourage women to be open-minded and see the world with fresh eyes. She celebrated diversity in style as creative self-expression, herself keeping the same jet black hairstyle and vibrant red lips as her signature look. Vreeland maintained ‘fashion changes… style remains’.
Of the modern mistresses of style none is more notable than the irreverent Kate Moss. Though newcomers such as American Olivia Palermo, Brit Alexa Chung and Aussie Miranda Kerr mix it up with the world’s best designers and flex their well-toned fashion muscles it is Mdme Moss that continues to elicit sighs of appreciation and envy. Her relaxed attitude combined with effortless looking combinations that always work astounds us and leave us wondering how she makes it look so easy. When you break down her looks more often than not they are comprised of classic pieces updated or worn in a refreshing way. Not only has she influenced the fashion sense of the last decades she is bound to go down as a style icon of her time.
