Minervois is the region in the South of France where Margarita Georgiadis undertook an artist’s residency in Sainte-Valière. The residency was in a chateau on the edge of the vineyards, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Mountains near the Spanish border. Margarita was artist in residence in Paris, Sainte-Valière and Noyers sur Serein, however, the landscape of the Minervois inspired her deeply. She produced extensive sketches in Sainte-Valière and since returning home to Australia, she has not been able to stop painting it. Perhaps because it was the first residency she undertook upon arrival in France, but more so because the landscape induced a sense of freedom with its vast, never ending vineyards that stretched between small villages.
“Spending entire days freely out among the vineyards, sketching beneath olive trees or by the Canal du Midi, so immersed in the landscape; which is what I endeavour to do wherever I travel. It was Sainte-Valière with its stunning vistas, roads that were easily walked along between the villages of Paraza and Carcassonne, to the Canal du Midi, the incredible town of Minerve, that inspired this entire body of work. I want to go back again and experience the freedom of the Minervois,” said Margarita.
This joyous body of work of work is now showing at the Rex-Livingston Art + Objects till 25 February, 2019.
