If you haven’t heard of Nightmares on Wax, N.O.W, DJ EASE, or George Evelyn, you are not alone, but come in from the cold and welcome to the chill…

All of these names refer to the same man George Evelyn. Originally from Leeds, England and now based in Ibiza, Evelyn is celebrating 25 years making records.

His first record (and he still releases albums on vinyl) was an EP with a 2000 imprint pressing in 1989. The first album Evelyn recorded A Word of Science: The First and Final Chapterwas released in 1991. On June 16, he will release an album of special N.O.W highlights, N.O.W is the Time; it will be his eleventh album.

Evelyn plays regular sets in Ibiza but is also conducting a large tour as part of the celebration of his quarter century. If you are in Europe or the United States, you will have the opportunity to see him (see link below for tour dates).

His first samples were limited to only one point six seconds, and he dreamed of the day he could sample longer tracks. In particular Quincy Jones’ Summer In The City sampled initially in Nights Interlude (A Word of Science, 1991), and then Nights Introlude (Smoker’s Delight, 1995) and then most spectacularly and beautifully in Les Nuits (Car Boot Soul, 1999).

My introduction to Nightmares on Wax was Les Nuits and I return to it often. It was a track on a very nice compilation CD set released about 13 years ago. It was a most sublime piece of music and I listened to it over and over again, and continue to do so today. I had to have more, and so the album it came from joined my collection. It was the first of many, I’m a total fan I admit it. See the link below for your own introduction.

Evelyn loves making his music and his own compositions are coloured by classics from the past. He works as a producer and consultant with others, doing mixes (including a beautiful version of Riders on The Storm by the Doors) and also takes great pleasure in remixes of his own work.

You can hear and see the man at work doing an extended set for Boiler Room TV, and if you login (including with your facebook account) you can download his set for free. Next dinner party music sorted there.

Although his earlier albums are very much for chilling, last year’s album Feelin’ Good (2013) covers a wider variety of music. In a brief documentary available on his website, Evelyn states what is very evident about his relationship with music and why he does it.

Because it’s fun and he loves it. Full stop.

I like relaxing. It’s one of my favourite things to do, and without doubt, one of my favourite companions is the music George Evelyn creates. I hope he gives you as much pleasure.

It’s fun and I love it.
