The grand old lady of garden shows, that’s how I view the Chelsea Flower Show, yet in many ways it is an innovative event on the annual international floral and garden festival stage.

The Chelsea Flower Show definitely gives garden designers from around the globe the opportunity to strut their stuff in front of the Queen of England no less.

Officially called the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, note the ‘R’ which stands for Royal has been around for more than one hundred years – it has been held in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital, London, every year since 1913.

New for 2014 is Discovery (in the Great Pavilion) replacing RHS Environment and showcases the best scientific and educational exhibits from the world of horticulture.

The show has over 500 exhibitors, getting around to viewing them all – now that’s a big day out in my books.

Australian Garden Show Sydney’s International Ambassador, Andrew Fisher Tomlin is Convenor of Judges at Chelsea and he will once again take part in Australasia’s most stylish and unique gardening, floral and lifestyle event, 4-7 September in Sydney’s iconic Centennial Parklands – I for one can’t wait. Andrew was recently interviewed at Chelsea by Better Homes & Gardens presenter Graham Ross, who just happens to be the Convenor of Judges at the Australian Garden Show Sydney – it’s a small world!

Youth is winning out at this year’s show when Hugo Bugg at the age of 27 became the youngest garden designer to achieve a gold medal for a show garden in the history of the show.

And last but not least, my favourite besides the gorgeous display gardens is that the power of community gardening was honoured at this year’s show – how on trend Chelsea!

Celebrating all things flowers is a great way to spend a few hours.
